How to Divide or Multiply by 10, 100 or 1000
First you apply the rules of Place Values to decide which direction you need to work in.
18 x 10
So you will be moving the digits one place to the left in order to multiply by 10 and inserting a place holding 0 in the units column.
So you end up with 18 x 10 = 180
When you divide using the rules of Place Values
180 / 10
So you will be moving the digits one place to the right in order to divide by 10 you will not need a decimal point as the tenths column will have 0 in it.
So you end up with 180 / 10 = 18
Rules of Place Values When Multiplying the digits
move one place value column to the left for x 10, two columns for x 100 and three columns for x 1000 and so on , not forgetting to put in the place holders as you go.
When Dividing the digits move one place value column to the right for x 10, two columns for x 100 and three columns for x 1000 and so on , not forgetting to put in a decimal point if you go below 0.
