How to add or subtract using partitioning

To partition a number using place values is to split it into tens and units etc. as appropriate, to use partitioning for subtraction you split the number being subtracted into tens and units then subtract the units from the given number to create a new number, then you subtract the tens from the new number to get the final answer.

Example

53 - 15

subtract units    53 - 5 = 48

subtract tens    48 - 10 = 38

answer = 38

To partition a number using place values is to split it into thousands, hundreds, tens and units etc. as appropriate, to use partitioning for addition you split both numbers then add their like parts together then add those totals together to get the final answer.

Example

1253 + 65

thousands    1000

hundreds   200

tens    50 + 60 = 110

units    3 + 5 = 8

answer 1000 + 200 + 110 + 8 = 1318
