How to subtract numbers

To subtract numbers from each other you can use a variety of written methods such as the column method, or a number line; or you could use a mental arithmetic method.

Resources for physically subtracting numbers together could include: an abacus, a 100 square, Cuisinaire rods, Numicon, Base 10 or simply use cubes or counters.

Try using more than one method and practice checking your answers with a calculator.

Government guidelines (Year 5/6)       Pupils should be taught to: add and subtract whole numbers with more than 4 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction). add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers. use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy. solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.   © Crown copyright 2013 Note: ideally pupils should be able to subtract numbers upto millions.
