How to add numbers together

To add numbers together you can use a variety of written methods such as the column method, or a number line; or you could use a mental arithmetic method.

Resources for physically adding numbers together could include: an abacus, a 100 square, Cuisinaire rods, Numicon, Base 10 or simply use cubes or counters.

Try using more than one method and practice checking your answers with a calculator.

Government guidelines (Year 5/6)

      Pupils should be taught to:

  • add and subtract whole numbers with more than 5 digits, including using formal written methods (columnar addition and subtraction)

  • add and subtract numbers mentally with increasingly large numbers

  • use rounding to check answers to calculations and determine, in the context of a problem, levels of accuracy

  • solve addition and subtraction multi-step problems in contexts, deciding which operations and methods to use and why.
